Membership

To stop the climate crisis, we need to speed up the energy transition and cut back on fossil fuels. This means the oil industry has to go green. But Big Oil is pushing back against change, even though they have the resources to lead the way.

By joining Follow This as a green shareholder, you support an international movement that is driving Big Oil and our planet toward a greener future. Together, we’re making a real difference in the fight against climate change.

Your contribution enables our organisation to have more impact where it really matters

  • continuous pressure on large investors in Big Oil
  • meaningful research by legal and industry experts
  • effective campaigns with impact on the industry

On behalf of you, we use shareholder rights to effect change at Big Oil and speed up the energy transition. That means we file

  • shareholder resolutions and attend annual shareholder meetings, and engage with large investors to ensure they add their weight to the vote
  • We ensure you stay informed with regular updates, essential content, and media recommendations
  • We empower you to take action yourself. Through us you can write to your pension fund, bank or insurer and call on them to use their voting power for good.

The short answer is ”no”. Even though Follow This is a ANBI-registered organization, membership contributions are not tax-deductible under Dutch law.

The long answer is “it depends”. The membership contribution of Follow This is €30.- per year. Members who have chosen a higher membership package are able to apply for a partial tax deduction. They can deduct €30 from their total annual expense, arriving at the tax-deductible amount.

For example:

  • Monthly €10 package: €120 paid in a full year, minus €30 membership contribution, equals €90 tax-deductible amount.
  • Annual €250 package: €250 paid per year, minus €30 membership contribution, equals €220 tax-deductible amount.

Results

Follow This has spent nearly a decade successfully pressuring major oil and gas companies to address product emissions and set emission targets.

Follow This has been active for almost ten years and has successfully put sustainability on the agenda of oil and gas companies. Large investors have supported our climate resolutions holding large companies (Shell, Equinor, BP, Total Energies, Phillips66, Chevron, etc.) accountable for
their product emissions.

In the case of Shell, the company’s reaction to our resolutions has served as hard and formal evidence in court of the oil majors unwillingness to align their emissions with the Paris Climate Agreement.

Usually, 99% shareholders follow the board’s advice on how to use their vote during the AGM. However, despite negative board advice, we see that around 20% of shareholders support our climate resolutions. Under this pressure, companies have started to accept accountability and set emission targets.

Companies are obliged to listen to their shareholders. Many financial institutions are very vocal about their responsibility to address climate change. But they don’t take action. Follow This needs your support to grow the campaign and ensure more investors put their vote where their mouth is.

Shares

As green shareholders, we leverage our ownership in oil and gas companies to actively drive them toward a clean energy future, accelerating the energy transition and significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

With the support of our members, Follow This has been able to obtain shares in all the five supermajors (BP, Chevron, Exxon, Shell, Total Energies) and a number of other oil and gas companies.

We ensure we always maintain more than sufficient shares in each company to have the right to file a resolution during the annual general meeting (AGM) of shareholders.

Follow This no longer offers the option to buy a “green share” in oil and gas companies because we own sufficient shares in all relevant oil companies to file our climate resolutions.

The best way to support our work is to become a member or to donate via our webshop.

Donations

You donation to Follow This directly supports our mission to drive Big Oil and our planet toward a greener future. Together, we’re making a real difference in the fight against climate change.

We use funding from our donors towards research that powers both our engagement with large investors and oil and gas companies. We also use proceeds from donations to support our staff and volunteers who prepare and file climate resolutions. Finally, in general, donations are essential for Follow This to grow our team and increase the impact we make as an organization.
